This series of related sculptures were installed as part of Invasive Species a solo exhibition that focused on one the conceptual notion of humans as animals. Until recently, the definitions of invasive and non-native species included the idea that these species were introduced to an area through human intervention. This definition excluded the notion that we ourselves could be an invasive species. Through the interpolation of specific material iconography (chandeliers, the top of a covered wagon, the omnipresent “we buy houses signs,” and colorful artificial grass) and the interplay of natural history references (termite mounds, Japanese beetles, and the texture of paper wasp nests) I sought to highlight my issues with the exceptionalist tendency in removing humans from the “natural order.”
